Tooth Extraction

One of the main goals at Elite Dental Group is to preserve your natural teeth as much as possible.

However, there are cases where tooth extraction is necessary. There are several reasons why you might need a tooth extraction.

Some of the most common causes include:

The tooth has become broken, often due to a traumatic accident or a collision.

The tooth has become significantly damaged and deteriorated due to untreated periodontal disease.

FAQs

What’s The Difference Between Tooth Extraction & Wisdom Tooth Surgery?

Generally speaking, wisdom tooth extraction is a surgical procedure. This is because the wisdom teeth are often not fully through the gum line or are impacted. A regular tooth can be “pulled” or extracted without requiring surgery. A surgical extraction is required when the wisdom teeth are underneath the gumline but still causing problems for your alignment or jawline.

What Can You Do to Promote Gum Healing Speed Up the Healing Time?

Aftercare will affect your healing time, so follow the dentist’s instructions. Here are a few tips:

  • Take pain relievers
  • Use ice packs to reduce swelling
  • Use saline water to rinse off the gum
  • Don’t use a straw to avoid breaking the blood clot
  • Elevate the head to stop bleeding
  • Eat foods that require less chewing
  • Brush and floss your teeth as you usually do, but avoid the site
  • Limit activity for 24 to 48 hours

Can I be put to sleep when undergoing dental extraction?

Absolutely! Since dental extraction is a surgical procedure, we recommend removing the tooth under sedation. Sedation helps make the process less painful, decreases your anxiety, and increases the treatment’s success.

How Long Will the Gum Take to Heal?

Though the healing time will depend on the type of surgery and the location of the teeth, you should expect to recover in seven to 14 days. The recovery time can sometimes take longer as the bone grows in the gum.

What to Do After Extraction?

When the gaps in between your teeth are left unfilled, they can cause the surrounding teeth to shift, thereby weakening the structure. Filling the spaces with veneers, bridges, or dental implants is recommended. All these dental solutions can work, so speak to the dentist about which suits you.

Do I need to rest after tooth removal?

Restrict the activity on the day of surgery, as vigorous exercise can cause throbbing and increased bleeding. You should call our office immediately if the bleeding continues.

Will it hurt when your tooth is extracted?

No, generally, tooth extraction does not hurt as we numb the area so you can’t feel any pain during the procedure. We also provide painkillers to help you stay comfortable while healing.
